Why Round Slabs Need a Different Formula

A rectangle uses length x width for area. A circle uses π x radius². If you use the rectangular formula on a round slab, you'll over-order by up to 21% — wasting hundreds of dollars on a typical residential project.

The Round Slab Formula

Volume (ft³) = π x radius² x thickness (in feet)

Volume (yd³) = Volume (ft³) ÷ 27

Where π ≈ 3.14159, radius = diameter ÷ 2, and thickness in feet = thickness in inches ÷ 12.

Example: 12-Foot Diameter Circular Patio at 4 Inches Thick

• Radius = 12 ÷ 2 = 6 feet
• Thickness = 4 ÷ 12 = 0.333 feet
• Area = 3.14159 x 6² = 113.1 ft²
• Volume = 113.1 x 0.333 = 37.7 ft³
• Cubic yards = 37.7 ÷ 27 = 1.40 yd³
• With 10% waste: 1.54 yd³ → order 1.75 yd³

Example: 18-Inch Diameter Column, 4 Feet Tall

• Radius = 18 ÷ 2 = 9 inches = 0.75 feet
• Height = 4 feet
• Volume = 3.14159 x 0.75² x 4 = 7.07 ft³
• Cubic yards = 7.07 ÷ 27 = 0.26 yd³ per column
• 8 columns: 0.26 x 8 = 2.1 yd³ → order 2.25 yd³
