1 Yard of Concrete Covers How Much Area?
A cubic yard is 27 cubic feet. Divide it by your slab thickness and you get coverage. Here's the whole table so you never have to do math on the phone with a supplier.
Coverage Per Cubic Yard
| Thickness | Coverage | Typical Use |
|---|---|---|
| 2 inches | 162 sq ft | Overlay |
| 3 inches | 108 sq ft | Walkway |
| 4 inches | 81 sq ft | Patio, sidewalk, shed base |
| 5 inches | 65 sq ft | Residential driveway edge |
| 6 inches | 54 sq ft | Driveway, garage floor |
| 8 inches | 40.5 sq ft | Heavy truck driveway, hot tub pad |

Working the other way: an 12x24 driveway at 4 inches needs 12x24x(4/12) = 96 cubic feet, divided by 27 = 3.56 yards. Round up to 3.75-4 yards with waste margin.
Don't Order to the Exact Number
Pros order 5-10% extra. Rounding grades, uneven subgrade, and spillage make short pours expensive to fix - a cold joint where the truck ran out costs far more than half a yard of surplus. Run your dimensions through our concrete calculator and it applies the waste factor for you.
