Concrete Slab Thickness Guide: Choosing the Right Depth

Ask a contractor how thick your concrete should be and the honest answer is: it depends entirely on what is going on top of it. A slab that is too thin cracks under load, and one that is too thick wastes money — concrete is the single most expensive material in the pour, and going from 4 to 6 inches raises the material cost by 50%. Here is the thickness chart by use, the reasoning behind each number, and how thickness changes your concrete order.

The Thickness Chart by Use

  • Patios and walkways: 4 inches at 3,000 PSI. Foot traffic and light furniture; wire mesh is usually enough reinforcement.
  • Driveways (passenger cars): 5 inches at 3,500 to 4,000 PSI. Vehicles concentrate weight on a small contact patch, so the extra inch and higher strength matter.
  • Garage floors: 6 inches at 4,000 PSI. A garage holds parked cars and, increasingly, heavy tools and workshop loads. Many codes require 4,000 PSI here.
  • Heavy vehicles, trucks, and equipment: 6 to 8 inches with engineered reinforcement. Anything carrying forklifts, delivery trucks, or industrial gear needs the deep end of the range.

These are general minimums. Local building codes set the enforceable numbers for your area, and soil conditions matter too — slabs on expansive clay or frost-prone ground often require more thickness and more reinforcement than the chart. Check your code before you pour, not after.

Why Thickness Matters So Much

A concrete slab fails in two ways: compression (the concrete crushes) and bending (the slab flexes and cracks). Thickness addresses bending directly. A thin slab under a vehicle acts like a plate that bends, and concrete is weak in tension, so it cracks across the bottom and the crack works its way up. More thickness gives the slab more rigidity, so it distributes the load over the subgrade instead of flexing. The 50% cost jump from 4 to 6 inches is buying real structural performance, not just extra material. If you are ever tempted to shave an inch to save money, remember that a cracked slab costs far more to repair than the inch would have cost upfront.

How Thickness Changes Your Concrete Order

Thickness is a direct multiplier on your concrete volume. Take a 10x20 slab. At 4 inches (0.333 feet): 10 x 20 x 0.333 = 66.7 cubic feet = 2.47 cubic yards. At 5 inches (0.417 feet): 83.3 cubic feet = 3.09 cubic yards. At 6 inches (0.5 feet): 100 cubic feet = 3.70 cubic yards. So that same driveway grows by about 0.6 yards, or roughly 25%, each inch you add — and the material cost grows with it. Add the 10% waste factor and at 6 inches you are ordering about 4.1 yards versus 2.7 at 4 inches. That is the difference between one truck and two, or between a small short-load fee and a clean single delivery. Run the numbers at both thicknesses through the calculator before you commit, because the decision is worth hundreds of dollars on any driveway-sized pour.

Slab-on-Grade vs. Thickened Edges

Many driveways and garage floors use a technique called a thickened edge: the main slab stays at 4 to 6 inches, but the perimeter beam is poured thicker — 8 to 12 inches — to carry the load-bearing walls or to resist frost heave and edge cracking. This gives you the structural benefit of a thicker slab at the edges where vehicles and walls bear down, without paying for a full 8-inch pour across the whole surface. If your project involves a structure on top of the slab, discuss a thickened edge with your contractor; it is often the most economical way to meet code requirements.
