Rebar Spacing Guide for Driveways: Getting the Grid Right
Concrete is strong in compression but weak in tension, which is exactly the load a driveway sees every time a vehicle crosses it. That is why a properly reinforced driveway needs rebar β not just wire mesh β laid out in a precise grid. Getting the spacing wrong in either direction causes problems: too wide and the slab cracks between bars, too tight and the concrete cannot flow around the steel, leaving voids. Here is the spacing guide that keeps a driveway crack-free for decades.
The Right Bar Size and Grid
For a standard residential driveway, use #3 (3/8 inch) or #4 (1/2 inch) rebar. The bars should be laid in a grid with 12 to 18 inches on center in both directions. The spacing you choose depends on the traffic the driveway carries:
- Standard passenger vehicles: #3 bar on an 18-inch grid
- Heavy trucks, RVs, or equipment: #4 bar on a 12-inch grid
- Commercial-grade traffic: #4 or #5 bar on 12-inch spacing with thickened edges
An 18-inch grid on a 20-foot driveway means roughly 13 bars running one direction and another 13 the other β about 26 bars total, each cut to length. Dropping to a 12-inch grid nearly doubles the steel, so price that difference before you decide.
Where the Rebar Goes: Concrete Cover
Rebar placement is every bit as important as spacing, and the most common mistake is letting the steel rest on the ground or on the gravel base. Rebar must be suspended in the top third of the slab β for a 5-inch driveway, that means roughly 2 inches down from the surface. The concrete between the surface and the steel is called the cover, and it does two jobs: it transfers load from the surface into the steel, and it protects the bars from moisture. If rebar sits near the bottom, it does almost no structural work and moisture wicks in to rust it. Rusted steel expands, and that expansion pops the concrete surface in a failure called spalling. Use rebar chairs or small concrete dobies to hold the bars at the correct height, never bricks or chunks of wood.
Lap Lengths and Ties
Rebar comes in fixed lengths, so a long driveway needs laps where two bars overlap. The standard lap length is 40 to 60 times the bar diameter β for #4 bar that is about 24 inches. Overlap at least that much, and stagger the laps so they do not all line up in one row, which would create a continuous weak seam across the slab. Tie every intersection with rebar wire, twisting it tight so the bars cannot shift when the concrete is poured. A grid that moves during the pour is as bad as no grid at all.
Rebar vs. Wire Mesh: Know the Difference
Many homeowners confuse rebar with welded wire mesh, but they serve different jobs. Wire mesh is a thin, light sheet of welded steel that controls small shrinkage cracks on slabs that carry little load β fine for a patio or walkway, marginal for a driveway. Rebar is a thick, heavy bar that actually carries structural tensile load, which is what a driveway needs to span the gaps under it and resist the bending force of vehicle weight. Use rebar on driveways. If your local code allows it, a reinforcing bar grid is the standard minimum; some jurisdictions require it outright, so check before you pour.
Worked Example: A 10x20 Driveway
Let's spec a 10x20 driveway carrying standard cars, poured 5 inches thick. Use #4 bar on a 12-inch grid for extra margin. Across the 20-foot length, you need 10 bars spaced 12 inches apart, each 10 feet long; across the 10-foot width, you need 20 bars, each 20 feet long. That is 100 + 400 = 500 linear feet of #4 rebar, or roughly 25 standard 20-foot sticks. Buy 10% extra for laps and waste. Set the whole grid on chairs at the right cover height, tie every intersection, and you have a reinforcement plan that will outlast the driveway. The concrete itself is 10 x 20 x 0.417 = 83.3 cubic feet, or 3.09 cubic yards β about 3.4 yards with waste, which clears the truck minimum and makes ready-mix the obvious choice.
