Bagged Concrete vs Ready-Mix: Breakeven Point

Bagged Concrete vs Ready-Mix: Which is Cheaper for Your Project?

Every concrete project starts with the same dilemma: do I spend a weekend mixing bags in a wheelbarrow, or do I pay a professional to deliver ready-mix concrete via a truck? While bags seem cheaper upfront, there is a mathematical breakeven point where ready-mix becomes the more economical and structural choice.

The Cost of Bagged Concrete

Bagged concrete is convenient for small repairs or tiny slabs. However, when you scale up, the cost per cubic yard skyrockets. A standard 80lb bag of high-strength concrete provides roughly 0.6 cubic feet. To get one cubic yard (27 cubic feet), you need approximately 45 bags. At current retail prices, the material cost alone for bagged concrete can exceed the cost of a ready-mix load.

The Ready-Mix Advantage

Ready-mix concrete is batched in a plant and delivered in a rotating drum, ensuring a consistent mix and high structural integrity. The primary costs are the price per yard and the delivery fee. For projects larger than 1 to 2 cubic yards, ready-mix almost always wins on price and quality. More importantly, the speed of a truck pour eliminates the risk of 'cold joints'—where one section of concrete dries before the next is poured, creating a structural weak point.

The Breakeven Calculation

The general rule of thumb is that if your project requires more than 1 cubic yard, call the truck. The labor cost of mixing 45+ bags by hand is immense, and the inconsistency of hand-mixing often leads to uneven curing and surface cracks. For anything larger than a small AC pad or a few stepping stones, ready-mix is the professional's choice.
