Cold Weather Concrete Pours: Survival Guide for Winter Construction

Pouring concrete in temperatures below 40 degrees Fahrenheit is a gamble. If the water in the concrete freezes before it cures, the ice crystals will expand and destroy the internal bond of the cement, reducing the strength of the slab by up to 50%. However, winter projects are often unavoidable. To succeed, you must manage the temperature of the mix and the environment.

Using Chemical Accelerators

The first line of defense is an accelerator, such as calcium chloride. These additives speed up the chemical reaction of hydration, allowing the concrete to set faster before the cold can penetrate the core. While effective, accelerators must be used carefully, as they can increase the risk of corrosion in reinforced steel if not balanced correctly.

Insulation and Heat

Once the concrete is poured, the goal is to maintain a consistent temperature. The most common method is using insulated curing blankets. These heavy-duty mats trap the heat generated by the chemical reaction (heat of hydration) and keep it inside the slab. In extreme cold, contractors may use ground heaters or even heated aggregates at the batch plant to ensure the concrete arrives at the site at an optimal temperature.

The Danger of the Freeze-Thaw Cycle

The most dangerous period is the first 48 hours. If a slab freezes and then thaws repeatedly, the surface will develop 'map cracking.' Always monitor the slab temperature with a probe and keep blankets in place until the concrete has reached at least 500 psi of strength, typically after several days of controlled heating.
