There is a common misconception that concrete 'dries.' In reality, concrete cures through a chemical process called hydration. When water hits the cement powder, it creates a crystalline structure that binds the aggregates together. If the water evaporates too quickly, this process stops, and your concrete will be weak, dusty, and prone to cracking.

The First 24 Hours: The Critical Window

The first day is about initial set. During this time, the concrete transitions from a liquid to a solid. You should avoid walking on the surface for at least 24 to 48 hours. However, the real work is happening internally. To ensure maximum strength, you should keep the surface moist. This is often done by spraying a fine mist of water over the slab or covering it with plastic sheeting to trap the moisture.

The 7-Day and 28-Day Milestones

Concrete gains strength over time. By day 7, most concrete has reached approximately 70% of its full structural capacity. This is usually when it is safe for foot traffic and light equipment. However, the industry standard for 'full cure' is 28 days. At this mark, the hydration process has reached a point of stability, and the concrete has attained its specified compressive strength.

Common Curing Mistakes

The biggest enemy of curing is heat and wind. In hot summer months, water evaporates rapidly, leading to 'shrinkage cracks.' Using a commercial curing compound—a liquid sealer that locks in moisture— is a highly effective way to ensure a professional result without the need for constant watering.
