How Many 80-lb Bags Make One Cubic Yard?
An 80-lb bag of concrete mix yields about 0.60 cubic feet when mixed. One cubic yard is 27 cubic feet. So: 27 / 0.60 = 45 bags for one yard. The 60-lb bag yields 0.45 ft³: 27 / 0.45 = 60 bags. The 40-lb bag yields 0.30 ft³: 90 bags.
Quick Bag Table
| Job Size | Volume | 80-lb Bags |
|---|---|---|
| Post hole 12" x 2 ft | 1.6 ft³ | 3 |
| Sidewalk section 3x10 at 4" | 10 ft³ | 17 |
| Small patio 8x10 at 4" | 27 ft³ | 45 |
| 1-car driveway pad 10x18 at 4" | 60 ft³ | 100 |
Where Bags Stop Making Sense
Twenty bags is my practical ceiling - that's about half a yard, roughly $60 of mix, and an hour of wheelbarrow work for one person. Past that, ready-mix delivery at $155-$185/yard beats bag labor every time: a full 10x18 driveway pad is 100 bags vs one truck. If you're on the fence, our bag vs ready-mix break-even guide runs the full comparison.
